SEO - Search Engine Optimisation

. What is it? How it works.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and is one of the most important aspects of getting a website seen in Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo etc.

When people search the Internet for products or services they type in specific keywords onto the search engine to find what they are looking for. You have probably done this yourself. In the old days people had to use a telephone directory or the yellow pages to find what they were looking for. As technology has progressed, people have become more reliant on the internet to find what they are looking for. Because of this, more and more companies are putting more resources into their online presence rather than printed advertising which can be more expensive and reaches a much smaller audience.

Any series of words typed into a search engine are called 'Search Terms'. These are the basis of any SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). In simple terms, if your website is not 'optimised' for search engines, the site will simply sit on the internet like an old book that is never read.

Because of this reason, over the last few years, many companies have appeared and sell themselves as SEO experts, aiming to get your website seen on the first page of Google etc. Beware, there are alot of companies who simply blind you with science and charge the earth for results that simply don't work.

For example, if you have a bicycle shop based in the centre of Manchester, then people who are looking for your shop won't simply type into Google 'bike shops', they will narrow the search down to their particular area. They will type in 'bike shopsin manchester'. This search term gives more specific results for the customer. So, if your website is optimised for 'bike shops' then it is very unlikely that you will be found for a search 'bike shops in manchester' as Google will look at the whole search term not just 'bike shops'.

Obviously this is a very basic example, but some SEO companies sell their services to clients, knowing that the client probably doesn't really understand what they are paying for. They will simply show them charts and figures based on search terms that, actually, bear no relation to what people are searching for.

But SEO goes alot further than that. There are 2 types of SEO.

1.On Page SEO.
On page SEO basically means that the website itself is optimised to the best it can be for a certain search term. This involves Headings, Tags, Keywords, Descriptions, body text and much more. All these factors play a major role in making the site 'Search Engine Friendly'.

2. Off Page Optimisation.
Off page Optimisation, basically means that outside factors on the Internet are used to help your site rank higher for your search words. These factors include, submission to imortant directory sites such as DMOZ, gaining links into your site via other sites with similar interests and using social media to help your sites popularity.

These are just some of the factors involved in getting your site 'optimised' for the best results. They are all time consuming and take alot of patience and knowledge about the internet and how it works.
